Universities Committed to Serving Hispanic Students

This is a list of 19 schools that are members of The Alliance of Hispanic Serving Research Universities. The HSRU is a group of 20 universities working to increase opportunities for Hispanic and Latinx students. The goals of the HSRU are to double the number of Hispanic doctoral students enrolled in the 20 universities and to increase the Hispanic professoriate at those universities by 20%.

Note: CUNY Graduate Center (a post-graduate university) is also a member of the HSRU.

Arizona State University at Tempe

ASU is classified as a Hispanic-serving institution with 26 percent of the on-campus student population comprising of Hispanic students. In addition, 22 percent of online learners are comprised of Hispanic students as well. Students can find resources and support services through the recently launched site hsi.asu.edu.

    At Florida International University, 66 percent of the student population is Hispanic. Additionally, FIU has the highest rate of Hispanic graduates than any other university in the US and the university also has the highest number of Hispanic students in STEM.

  • Texas Tech University

    Texas Tech University has an undergraduate Hispanic student population of 29.7 percent. The university supports a host of programs and services for underrepresented students, students of color, and first-gen students including students who are Hispanic. Among the available programs is the popular Hispanic Serving Institution Week which is a week full of events to start out Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month.

    The University of Arizona’s Hispanic population is 26.1 percent Hispanic or Latino – the second highest at the university. According to the National Science Foundation, The University of Arizona has ranked 7th out of 384 institutions rewarding doctoral degrees to the most Hispanic or Latinx students.

    University of California, Irvine has a Hispanic and Latino student population of 25.7 percent. The university has prides itself on being a federally recognized Hispanic-serving institution since 2017. The university has the UCI Orange County Alliance for a Latinx University which provides programs mentorships, and scholarships for Latinx students.

    As a Hispanic-serving institution, UC Santa Barbara serves its Latinx community through a variety of resources, groups, and organizations. Such community resources include dozens of student organizations and student services like the Chicanx/Latinx Cultural Resource Center.
